Vodafone Qatar in collaboration with Nokia has deployed 25Gbps-capable PON-based fibre broadband access technology in the Msheireb Smart City district, with the partners announcing that they will demonstrate speeds of up to 100Gbps using a Nokia Bell Labs prototype in the near future. Vodafone Qatar claims that its network users in Msheireb Smart City will enjoy the fastest residential fibre internet speeds in the Middle East, with its existing ‘GigaHome’ fibre customers set to receive upgrades to their service packages.

CEO of Msheireb Properties, Ali Mohamed Al-Kuwari, was quoted as saying: ‘We are proud that our Smart City Msheireb Downtown Doha will be at the forefront of technological innovations in Qatar and the Middle East, and adopt Vodafone’s latest data technology which offers unprecedented internet speed of up to 25Gbps to the users.’ Toni Pellegrino of Nokia MEA added: ‘We at Nokia are proud to deploy the country’s first 25G PON network for Vodafone Qatar to support the Msheireb smart city services with our innovative technology. We are looking forward to supporting our long-term partner Vodafone Qatar to demonstrate the power of next generation fibre networks to enable pioneering services for residential consumers and enterprises.’
