Safaricom, Huawei partner for 5G experience centres in Nairobi

17 Mar 2023

Kenyan telecoms company Safaricom has announced the launch of three 5G experience centres in Nairobi to give consumers the opportunity to trial high speed mobile data services. The firm has partnered with Chinese equipment vendor Huawei to showcase the technology. ‘We are excited to unveil these experience centres, which will enable Kenyans to discover the power of 5G first hand. As a digital lifestyle enabler, we are further enhancing Kenya’s best internet network and empowering our customers to start exploring the limitless possibilities that 5G provides,’ commented Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Safaricom launched its 5G home broadband service on a commercial basis in October last year, having piloted the fixed wireless access (FWA) network since March 2021, although 5G services for mobile handset customers are understood to be limited. Coverage is available in locations including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Kisii, Kakamega, Nakuru, Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado, Vihiga and Siaya.
