CelcomDigi expanding 5G ‘free trial’ offerings

3 Mar 2023

Malaysian mobile sister brands Digi and Celcom – collectively CelcomDigi – have announced that they are extending and expanding their 5G ‘free trial’ promotions for a wider pool of customers.

The Digi website announced that from 1 March ‘free trial 5G access’ is available to more Digi customers with its new ‘5G Booster’ option for post-paid and pre-paid users, allowing them to use their existing mobile data quotas across 4G/5G networks wherever available. Digi post-paid customers can activate the 5G Booster immediately, while pre-paid users on selected monthly internet plans will gain access to the 5G Booster on 16 March 2023. Justifying the ‘free’ label, the standard MYR10 (USD2.23) monthly 5G Booster fee will be waived for all activations during the period 1 March-30 April 2023. Furthermore, after that date customers on Digi post-paid tariffs above MYR90 will continue to enjoy the 5G Booster for free. The offer is also open to Digi Business customers.

On 1 March the existing ‘free 5G trial access’ for Celcom’s ‘MEGA post-paid’, ‘Xpax post-paid’ and ‘Xpax pre-paid’ customers was extended until 30 April 2023, while the Celcom and Digi websites highlighted that ‘more 5G offers with the flexibility for customers to choose their preferred 5G experience’ will be introduced ‘soon’. More information on the new offers will be announced in Q2 2023, according to the media releases.

All cellcos in Malaysia offer 5G services over the wholesale network operated by Digital Nasional Berhad, with Celcom and Digi customers gaining access to the network since November 2022. At the end of that month the then-Celcom Axiata and Digi Telecommunications completed their merger under the CelcomDigi corporate banner.
