Open Fiber tests 50G-PON

24 Jan 2023

Italian wholesale network operator Open Fiber says it has successfully tested 50G-PON technology in a controlled environment. The technology allows theoretical download rates of up to 50Gbps on the access network. Guido Bertinetti, Director of Network & Operations at Open Fiber, said: ‘The success of this trial will allow us in a short time to provide partner operators with a new standard to offer to their customers, companies and public administrations, capable of supporting the most advanced digital services of today and those of the future.’ TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Open Fiber has fibre networks passing around 15.5 million homes across Italy.
