Jio’s 5G network reaches 101 cities; Airtel covers more than 30 cities with 5G

13 Jan 2023

Indian full-service provider Reliance Jio Infocomm (Jio) has extended its 5G network to more than 100 cities, the Economic Times reports. Jio’s Standalone (5G) network is now available in 101 cities across 23 states, although a full commercial launch of 5G services is yet to take place. Access to the network via Jio’s ‘Welcome Offer’ remains invitation-only, with customers on plans of INR239 (USD2.9) and above and using compatible devices granted able to use the network.

Meanwhile, rival cellco Airtel added coverage of two cities in Jharkhand and four cities in Bihar, bringing its footprint to more than 30 cities. In contrast to Jio, Airtel’s network is Non-Standalone (NSA) and was commercially launched in October last year. Airtel’s 5G services are available to users on existing data plans and will remain so until it completes its network rollout.
