Govt to present plan to reform Tmcel by 1Q23, minister says

9 Dec 2022

The Mozambican government has promised to present a plan to reform state backed Mocambique Telecom (Tmcel) by the first quarter of 2023. The pledge was made by Mateus Magala, the Minister of Transport and Communications, who hopes to avoid the privatisation of the company, which he says is in a ‘gloomy situation’.

Local website Club of Mozambique quotes the official as saying: ‘I never said that we are going to privatise these companies. What I said is that if you want to make good reforms, you cannot exclude the worst options. In this case, all options should be put on the table. You don’t privatise a public company at will, you need consensual debates, and it is not true that privatisation is the cure for all problems.’
