MTN to begin deactivation of 5.7m subscriptions from 1 December

29 Nov 2022

In compliance with a directive issued by the National Communications Authority (NCA) earlier this month, MTN Ghana has announced that from 1 December it will begin fully disconnecting any subscriptions that have not completed the SIM registration process.

Noting that it was committed to the registration exercise to build an accurate customer database and help minimise fraud, the operator revealed that about 22.1 million customers had linked their Ghana Card ID to their SIM (stage one of the process) as of 26 November, while 16.4 million had successfully completed the final biometric data capture step. As a result, approximately 5.7 million subscriptions will be eligible for deactivation on 1 December 2022.

The operator had previously complied with the initial stage of the directive ordering the deactivation of data services for subscriptions that had only completed stage one of the registration process. Customers will have until the end of May 2023 to reactivate their accounts by completing the bio-capture process.
