Safaricom Ethiopia, which announced the official commercial launch of its mobile network last month following a soft-launch in August 2022, has reportedly surpassed one million subscriptions.
Earlier this month Kenya’s Safaricom, which is one of the major shareholders in Safaricom Ethiopia, confirmed that the new cellco had attracted a total of 740,000 subscriptions as of 31 October 2022, up from 180,000 at the end of the previous month. Now, the Ethiopian operator has confirmed that it has surpassed the one million mobile subscription milestone, while claiming to have ‘registered an average of 20,000 customers per day since it commenced city-by-city customer pilots in August 2022’, while saying its momentum had been ‘further sustained by accelerated growth following a national launch ceremony [last month]’.
Commenting, Safaricom Ethopia CEO Anwar Soussa said: ‘We are delighted that we have reached the one million customer milestone. We have seen our customer numbers continue to grow and the enthusiastic uptake of our data, devices, voice and SMS packages. As we continue our phased commercial launch, we are receiving positive feedback about the 4G data experience on our network and are excited to continue working towards serving all of Ethiopia.’
Meanwhile, the cellco also confirmed that its network has now been switched on in a total of 17 cities, namely: Adama, Addis Ababa, Awoday, Bahir Dar, Bishoftu, Debre Birhan, Dessie, Dilla, Dire Dawa, Gondar, Haramaya, Harar, Jimma, Kombolcha, Mojo, Sebeta and Shashemene.
