Jio launches 5G-powered Wi-Fi

24 Oct 2022

Full-service provider Reliance Jio Infocomm (Jio) has launched 5G-powered Wi-Fi services in high traffic areas, such as railway stations, commercial hubs, educational institutions and religious sites. In addition, the operator announced that it has extended coverage of its ‘JioTrue5G’ service – a beta trial of its 5G Standalone (SA) platform – to a fifth city, Chennai, having launched the service in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Varanasi earlier this month. Jio notes that whilst any Jio customer can access the 5G Wi-Fi service free of charge, ‘non-Jio customers will also be able to try this service before they move to Jio to get the full and unlimited service experience’.

In a related development, Jio’s parent company Jio Platforms Limited (JPL) booked gross revenues of INR285 billion (USD3.5 billion) for the three months to end-September 2022, up from INR275 billion in the same period of 2021. EBITDA was INR120 billion, an increase of 29% year-on-year, whilst net profit improved from INR37 billion to INR47 billion. ARPU for the quarter was INR177.2, with the company counting a total of 427.6 million subscriptions. Data traffic for the three months totalled 28.2 billion GB (up 22.7% y-o-y) and total voice traffic increased by 12.3% y-o-y to 1.23 trillion minutes.
