Claro Guatemala launches 5G in all 22 departments

22 Jul 2022

America Movil-backed Claro Guatemala has become the second Guatemalan cellco to launch 5G technology in quick succession. The new network is said to be live in all 22 departments from launch, while a number of 5G-compatible Motorola and Samsung handsets are available via the company’s website.

Claro’s 5G spectrum band has not been disclosed, although TeleGeography notes that the cellco is in possession of a 12MHz block of spectrum in the 900MHz band, 120MHz in the 1900MHz band and also a 175MHz block of spectrum in the 3.5GHz band that has been ‘granted for the provision of any type of telecommunications service’. All spectrum expires in 2033.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Claro’s sole mobile rival Tigo switched on its own 3.5GHz 5G network at 100 cell sites in Guatemala City earlier this month.
