Claro starts sale of former Oi base stations

21 Jul 2022

Claro Brasil has initiated the process to find buyers for the surplus base transceiver stations (BTS) acquired as part of the BRL15.922 billion (USD3.425 billion) joint takeover of Oi Movel. According to TeleTime, Claro has priced 2G-only cell sites at just over BRL5,000, while 2G/3G towers will cost BRL25,300. A premium 3G/4G base station in a major market such as Belo Horizonte, meanwhile, is priced at BRL244,600. Claro’s sale proposal has been submitted to the Administrative Council for Economic Defence (Conselho Administrativo de Defesa Economica, CADE) for approval.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, earlier this month TIM Brasil and Telefonica Brasil (Vivo) started their own sale processes. TIM Brasil’s prices range from BRL26,187 for a 2G-only base station to BRL322,293 for a 2G/3G/4G/5G-compatible base station, while Vivo has set the price for a 2G/3G/4G base station as BRL83,700.

All three acquisitive parties (TIM, Vivo and Claro) are obliged to sell off certain base stations as part of an anticompetition measure imposed on the Oi Movel transaction.
