Entel 5G service live in all regions, rollout 83% complete

1 Jul 2022

Chilean full-service provider Entel has launched 5G services in all regions of the country and has completed 83% of its network rollout so far. To-date the company has deployed 5G coverage to 222 communes (Chile’s smallest administrative division and of which there are a total of 346). Commenting on the network expansion drive, Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs, Manuel Araya, was quoted as saying: ‘Our commitment has always been to bring 5G closer to the greatest number of Chileans, in the shortest possible time, and this is a significant step towards this goal. In fact, the speed of deployment of this technology has been significantly faster than in previous experiences.’

In terms of take-up of 5G services, the official claimed that adoption has been much faster than previous technologies. Entel claims that around 5G-compatible devices represent around 50% of its current smartphone sales, and that around 600,00 Entel customers now have compatible handsets. Of these, just over 460,000 customers – or 5.8% of the company’s total mobile subscriptions – connected to the 5G network in May 2022. By contrast, Mr Araya notes: ‘In the first technological change in 2006, from 2G to 3G, it took more than 3.5 years (45 months) for there to be 460 thousand Entel customers connected. In the case of 4G, launched in 2014, reaching that same figure required approximately one year. And with 5G it was achieved in less than six months.’
