Four Bangladeshi telcos fined BDT76.5m for illegal VoIP operations

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has fined four mobile network operators a total of BDT76.5 million (USD808,000) for illegal VoIP operations. State-run Teletalk was handed a BDT50 million fine, Robi Axiata BDT20 million, GrameenPhone BDT5 million, and Banglalink BDT1.5 million. All operators have been given until 30 June to clear the dues. According to unnamed sources at the BTRC, the law enforcement agencies – in collaboration with the telecom regulator – conducted raids and seized 52,344 SIM cards along with VoIP equipment in different parts of Bangladesh in 2018 and 2019.
