Chilean mobile provider WOM has extended its 5G network to cover 246 communes nationwide and now claims that the network is available to 73% of the country’s urban population, or around 13 million people. On a regional basis, WOM’s 5G network was available to 63% of the urban population of Atacama, whilst the rates for Maule and Nuble were 68% and 48%, respectively. In a related development, meanwhile, WOM strategy manager Pablo Gonzalez was quoted as saying that – in addition to the progress made in the three aforementioned regions – the company had deployed 80% of its National Fibre Optic Network (Fibra Optica Nacional, FON) project rollout. As noted by TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, WOM was selected to roll out fibre connectivity to underserved communities across the country as part of the government’s FON programme, winning contracts for five of the six available projects. Under the programme, WOM will deploy a total of 7,040km of fibre in nine regions
