Fresh from awarding Ericsson a contract to deploy its newly acquired C-band and 3.45GHz spectrum, United States Cellular (UScellular) has added Nokia to the vendor mix with a parallel 5G agreement. Under the terms of the deal, the vendor will supply the cellco with its Massive MIMO radios, macro remote radio heads and AirScale baseband equipment in the C-band and 3.45GHz band.
UScellular currently has low-band (600MHz) 5G coverage in portions of all its markets and has launched 5G millimetre wave (mmWave, 24GHz/28GHz) Home Internet+ services in parts of ten cities. It expects to activate the new mid-band spectrum for customer use by the end of 2023.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, UScellular acquired 254 C-band licences in the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Auction 107 sale, paying a total of USD1.46 billion. In Auction 110, meanwhile, US Cellular paid USD579.6 million for 380 licences 3.45GHz licences.
