Qualcomm, Drei and ZTE demo 5G SA using 700MHz band with 1400MHz aggregation

10 May 2022

Qualcomm Technologies, Hutchison Drei Austria and ZTE have partnered to demonstrate a 5G Standalone (SA) network using a coverage layer operating in the 700MHz band along with the world’s first supplemental downlink band 1400MHz with 30MHz of bandwidth. The parties state that this milestone will help in accelerating 5G expansion in suburban and rural areas with enhanced download speeds and coverage for customers. They added that the commercial deployment model has significant potential for operators to improve 5G coverage with 5G SA deployments across the remainder of Europe.

‘In 2020 we acquired 5G spectrum in several frequency bands. Especially the new SDL band at 1400MHz has the potential to improve the downlink experience substantially,’ stated Matthias Baldermann, CTO at Hutchison Drei Austria, adding: ‘The first implementation and successful testing of this band worldwide together with Qualcomm Technologies and ZTE is a major step towards commercialisation of the full 5G potential and bringing high quality broadband coverage also to remote rural areas.’
