The Nigerian government has urged the nation’s mobile phone users to update their SIM cards with their National Identity Numbers (NINs) over ‘the next few days’, following the passing of the registration deadline on 31 March. The aim of the NIN and SIM registration exercise, which commenced in December 2020 and has been extended multiple times, is to improve security in the West African nation. With the passing of the deadline, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami has urged citizens and legal residents to ensure that they complete the process, and has directed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to offer enrolment services ‘round-the-clock for the next few days’.
