Telekom Deutschland, the domestic fixed and mobile unit of Deutsche Telekom, plans to expand its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network to over 250,000 homes in Essen by 2026. After rolling out fibre connectivity to around 11,000 households last year and a further 40,000 this year, the firm says it will deploy 50,000 fibre connections annually in the city, enabling maximum download speeds of 1Gbps.

Frank Schmidt, Group Representative for the West Region of Telekom, said: ‘In Essen we are implementing one of Telekom’s largest urban expansion programmes in Germany. In order to underpin our ambitions and make it clear that we are serious, we have presented the city with our expansion plans up to 2026.’
