WOM launches 5G network

25 Mar 2022

Chilean cellco WOM has commercially launched its 5G network, following a limited soft-launch in January this year. The system currently covers a total of 99 communes across several regions – including Valparaiso, Biobio and the Santiago Metropolitan Region – and is accessible by all WOM customers with compatible devices at no additional cost. Devices currently compatible with WOM’s network include handsets from Nokia, Huawei, Motorola, Samsung, Xiaomi and Vivo. Tests of the network carried out by local news site Pisapapeles in Valparaiso and Santiago delivered download speeds of around 300Mbps and 350Mbps, respectively.

Regarding the launch, WOM CEO Christopher Laska was quoted as saying: ‘We are very pleased to be able to officially launch our 5G network, starting with the regions and in line with our commitment to democratise and decentralise connectivity. Likewise, we are focused on accelerating the deployment during the next five months from Arica to Punta Arenas and thus delivering the best experience to all our clients.’
