Antel invested USD145m in fixed, mobile networks in 2021

Uruguayan state-owned operator Antel generated a net profit of USD247 million in 2021, as operating expenses were reduced by 10%. The firm’s head Gabriel Gurmendez said that mobile data traffic jumped 50% last year and fixed internet traffic rose by 17%, while the number of subscriptions rose by 6% (mobile), 4% (fixed broadband) and 3% (fixed voice). Antel revealed that a total of USD145 million was invested in 2021, up from USD125 million the previous year, with the funds focused on expanding the capacity of the mobile network throughout the country, the replacement of copper lines with fibre-optics, the modernisation of information systems and on preparations for 5G rollout.
