FCC’s 2.5GHz auction to start on 29 July

22 Mar 2022

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced that its auction of 5G-suitable spectrum in the 2496MHz-2690MHz (2.5GHz) band will get underway on 29 July. Auction 108, which will utilise an ‘ascending clock’ format, will offer approximately 8,000 new flexible-use, county-based overlay licences. These concessions cover mostly rural areas, with the spectrum unassigned following a Rural Tribal Priority Window, which resulted in the grant of 335 licences to serve Tribal communities.

FCC chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel commented: ‘Today we are readying the launch of the next 5G mid-band spectrum auction, following close on the heels of the recent, successful 3.45GHz auction … The 2.5GHz band spectrum provides an opportunity to fill in some of the critical 5G gaps in rural America.’
