Turk Telekom signs 5G MoU with Huawei, ‘goodwill agreement’ with ZTE; names partners for Open vRAN and other projects

Turk Telekom (TT) and China’s Huawei Technologies have signed a memorandum of understanding (Mou) on developing 5G technology for cellular broadband networks in Turkey. Initial focus areas under the MoU will include smart agriculture applications and 5G-supported gaming, while TT CEO Umit Onal highlighted demand for 5G solutions in sectors including transportation, health, education, agriculture, entertainment and urbanisation.

TT also signed a ‘goodwill agreement’ with another Chinese vendor, ZTE, and Turkish tech company Neta to work on solutions in the fields of access, IPTV and end devices, to implement new generation technologies and applications in Turkey.

TT also announced a list of other Turkish partner companies for 5G-related projects, including TARNET (to develop 5G applications in the field of Smart Agriculture), Odine (developing cloud computing virtualisation solutions towards ‘Cloud Native Strategic Transformation for 5G’) and local software company i2i for ‘PCRF/PCF – one of the most critical systems of the core network supporting all mobile technologies including 5G.’

Furthermore, TT selected US-based Mavenir for an Open virtualised RAN (Open vRAN) pilot. Telecom Infra Project (TIP) will support the trial and ComPro Information Technologies will act as systems integrator. The pilot will include 4G radio units (RUs), 4G small cells and 5G Massive MIMO RUs with embedded beamforming technologies that conform to the O-RAN Alliance fronthaul specifications. The pilot will test Open vRAN in the TT Innovation Centre and in the field on pilot sites. Earlier in February, another US vendor, Parallel Wireless, announced a collaboration with TT and Juniper Networks on a multi-vendor Open RAN initiative utilising RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC).
