Telcel launches 5G in 18 major cities

23 Feb 2022

America Movil (AM)-backed Telcel has launched 5G services in 18 major cities. From launch the Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G network will cover Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Merida, San Luis Potosi, Tijuana, Queretaro, Culiacan, Mazatlan, Durango, Leon, Toluca, Hermosillo, Juarez, Chihuahua, Torreon, Saltillo and Puebla. Daniel Hajj, Director General, commented: ‘Today we celebrate the arrival of the Telcel 5G network in Mexico. This is a technological transformation that will revolutionise the way we connect, communicate and interact.’

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, earlier this month the Federal Telecommunications Institute (Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones, IFT) authorised Telcel to introduce 5G technology. In order to facilitate the company’s 5G ambitions, the watchdog agreed to modify 18 fixed wireless access (FWA) concessions held by Telcel for mobile use. In addition, the IFT switched the telco’s pre-existing 3450MHz-3550MHz spectrum holdings for 3350MHz-3450MHz frequencies to avoid interference issues.
