Lifecell launches VoLTE; introduces dual number service

18 Feb 2022

Ukrainian mobile operator Lifecell has announced the commercial launch of VoLTE services, although it states on its website that the technology is only available to certain subscribers initially, with the expansion of availability to ‘take place in stages’. Subscribers will receive an SMS message from the operator when they gain access to VoLTE, and eventually Lifecell says VoLTE will be available to all subscribers whose smartphones allow the voice-over-LTE service. VoLTE calls are charged at the same rate as other mobile calls, it added. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that larger operator Kyivstar claimed Ukraine’s first VoLTE launch in December 2020.

This week Lifecell also launched its ‘Second Number’ service, allowing subscribers to pay for a secondary mobile phone number on the same SIM card as their main number. The operator says that the second number ‘is convenient to use for the sale of goods on marketplaces, the establishment of temporary working contacts, social media accounts or new acquaintances’ and will also ‘help maintain the confidentiality of the main phone number, because the interlocutors will see only the second number when talking or communicating via SMS and in messengers.’ A second number costs UAH30 (USD1.05) per 30 days.
