ONI unveils 10Gbps FTTP network

16 Feb 2022

Portuguese B2B player Onitelecom (ONI) has launched a new 10Gbps-capable fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) network, its parent company has confirmed. Spanish communications group GIGAS – which acquired ONI in 1Q21 – has announced that the new XGS-PON infrastructure represents the first symmetrical 10Gbps connection in Portugal. The network delivers potential coverage to an initial 25,000 companies, a figure which is expected to increase to 120,000 over the next three years.

Diego Cabezudo, CEO and co-founder of GIGAS, commented: ‘With this new service, GIGAS reiterates its commitment to invest in Portugal, which accounts for more than half of the group’s revenue … The offering of 10Gbps speeds without a lock-in clause will make it easier for companies to tackle ambitious digitalisation projects that will help them thrive and succeed.’

Since launching back in 2000 ONI says it has invested a total of EUR550 million (USD623.7 million) in its fibre-optic networks, deploying more than 9,200km of fibre across Portugal.
