ECOI consults on the planned 2G/3G shutdown

16 Feb 2022

The Electronic Communications Office of Iceland (ECOI) has opened a public consultation on the planned closure of the country’s 2G and 3G networks, with interested parties given until 8 March to submit their comments on the topic. The regulator highlighted that it recently worked with the electronic communications companies that operate general mobile network systems in the country – Nova, Siminn and Vodafone – to formulate a plan for the closure of 2G and 3G, under which 2G services will be completely shut down by the end of 2024 and 3G by the end of 2025. After the comment period expires, ECOI will, in consultation with the above-mentioned telecoms companies, take a position on the comments, with the aim of publishing the final plan for the closure of 2G and 3G no later than 31 March.
