Despite reports last week suggesting that Telekom Malaysia was planning to begin offering 5G connectivity to end users from February 2022, the operator has now clarified that it does not actually have a date for customer trials at present.
Last week local news outlet Soya Cincau reported that the Telekom Malaysia website had been updated with an indication that the operator would begin offering 5G services to consumers next month. However, references to a February 2022 launch were subsequently removed from the website, and were instead replaced with a message saying only that customers would be able to ‘enjoy 5G data soon’.
Following this, the operator issued a statement regarding the matter, confirming it had yet to set a concrete date for its 5G end user trials. In this, it said: ‘We have received enquiries on when 5G will be available to our unifi Mobile customers … Our goal is to provide unifi Mobile customers the best 5G experience we can offer. As such, we are currently doing extensive internal testing on our 5G service. At this point of time, we are unable to provide the actual date for customer trials.’
As previously reported by CommsUpdate, in December 2021 Telekom Malaysia became one of the first companies to agree to conduct 5G trials with state-run Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), the company which is rolling out the country’s sole wholesale 5G network.
