RCN Telecom, Grande Communications, Wave Broadband, enTouch and Digital West – who together claim to form the sixth largest US cableco by subscriptions – have announced plans to transition the various regional brands to the Astound Broadband name with immediate effect. Astound Broadband, which is currently the name used by the holding company in charge of the disparate ISP assets, serves eight of the top ten US metro markets and presides over 31,000 route miles of fibre across the country.
In order to emphasise the group’s strong continued regional service focus, however, each entity will retain sub-brands under the Astound umbrella with Astound Broadband powered by RCN in the north-eastern US, Astound Broadband powered by Grande in Texas and Astound Broadband powered by Wave, on the West Coast. Recently acquired systems Harris Broadband in Central Texas and WOW!’s Illinois, Indiana and Maryland markets will follow by mid-year. For B2B services, the combined companies will be unified as Astound Business Solutions.
As previously reported by CommsUpdate, in August 2021 alternative investment firm Stonepeak closed its previously announced USD8.1 billion acquisition of Astound Broadband. Stonepeak acquired the company from TPG Capital and Patriot Media Management, although Patriot Media indicated that it will continue to ‘invest significantly’ in the cable networks.
