Magenta expands network footprint with acquisition of regional operators

13 Jan 2022

Full-service provider Magenta Telekom, which was formed in 2019 from the merger of wireless operator T-Mobile Austria and cableco UPC Austria, has announced the acquisition of three local fibre-optic network operators based in Lower Austria and Tyrol. With the purchase of AURA, GFI and Rudolf Geiger & Co/Kabel-TV Seefeld, a total of around 5,500 households and businesses in Lower Austria and around 1,200 households and businesses in Tyrol will be connected to the Magenta network this month. The network in Lower Austria will also be expanded by 1,500 new connections in new AURA buildings over the next few years.

In Lower Austria, the networks acquired by Magenta are located in the municipalities of Bad Voeslau, Baden, Enzesfeld-Lindabrunn, Kottingbrunn, Leobersdorf, Leopoldsdorf, Siebenhaus, Unterwaltersdorf, Voesendorf and Wiener Neudorf, while the Tyrol-based networks are situated in the municipality of Seefeld and the surrounding areas of Auland, Gschwand and Krinz. Magenta states that it supplies over 1.5 million households with gigabit-capable fixed broadband speeds and last year it demonstrated data rates of 2.2Gbps in a residential building in Vienna. The firm adds that multi-gigabit internet will be rolled out across Austria in the next few years before it is offered commercially.

‘We warmly welcome our new customers in Lower Austria and Tyrol to Magenta and look forward to starting the new year together. The takeover of regional cable network operators by Magenta Telekom is a consistently positive signal to customers and communities. Thanks to our many years of experience as a network operator, existing networks are being expanded and consolidated, more internet speed and capacity are being made available, and new households are being opened up,’ said Andreas Bierwirth, CEO of Magenta Telekom, adding: ‘It is our declared goal to invest in our fibre-optic cable networks in order to further expand our role as Austria’s leading broadband provider. For our customers this means that they can rely on a very fast, stable fibre-optic cable internet and a comprehensive range of TV offers.’
