Trio launch 5G networks

20 Dec 2021

Chilean cellcos Movistar, WOM and Entel have activated their 5G networks, the trio confirmed in a joint statement with sector watchdog the Department of Telecommunications (Subsecretaria de Telecomunicaciones, Subtel). Movistar’s network, which uses a 50MHz block of airwaves in the 3500MHz band, will have a national presence by March 2022, the cellco claimed, with coverage in all 16 Regions. Movistar is aiming to deploy a total of 1,500 5G sites by that date. Entel’s network, meanwhile, covers parts of six regions – Tarapaca, Valparaiso, O’Higgins, Biobio, Araucania and the Santiago Metropolitan Region (RM) – including 33 of the RM’s 52 communes. Entel customers with compatible devices can access the 5G network at no extra cost. WOM, however, offered no further information regarding the activation of its 5G network.
