MVNO Monday: a guide to the week’s virtual operator developments

New call-to-action

6 Dec 2021

UK MVNO ParentShield has activated ‘Daily Data Budgeting’ functionality for its customers. The virtual operator, which allows parents to oversee their child’s phone usage without invading their privacy, previously stated: ‘The pre-mobile advice to carry change for a phone-box or knock on a stranger’s door and ask to use their phone in an emergency is, these days, dangerously out of date.’ The MVNO, which is backed by Derbyshire-based Engine Mobile is understood to utilise all four UK mobile networks but lists its ‘preferred networks for technical reasons’ as Vodafone, Three and O2.

Spain has a new MVNO in the form of OROC, which piggybacks on the Orange Espana network. The newcomer’s website states: ‘Among our main objectives is to provide personalised, simple and transparent customer service.’ Alongside its mobile offering, OROC also offers fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) connectivity, also via the Orange network.

PilloFon, the Mexican MVNO owned by Diri Telecomunicaciones, has informed the local media that it has reached the 100,000 subscriptions milestone. PilloFon – which operates over the Red Compartida open access network – is a partnership between Diri founder Alejandro Corsi and YouTuber Luisito Comunica.

Sticking with Latin America, Brazilian MVNO Veek has extended the availability of its service to 963 new towns and cities across Sergipe, Goias, Mato Grosso, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Norte and Ceara. While no current figure has been disclosed, Veek says it is on course to reach one million subscriptions by 2022. TeleGeography notes that Veek relaunched in July 2020 after a one-year hiatus; its first MVNO attempt was shut down in July 2019.
