New Zealand wholesale fixed line provider Chorus has completed a performance upgrade to provide faster fibre connections to as many as 600,000 homes and businesses. Residential customers on the wholesaler’s 100Mbps fibre plan can now access triple the download speed from certain retailers, the operator has announced, while upload speeds have been increased five-fold from 20Mbps to 100Mbps. Businesses have also benefited from the symmetrical 100Mbps ‘Business Evolve’ and ‘Business Fibre’ plans moving to speeds of 300Mbps and 500Mbps, respectively. There is no additional wholesale cost for this performance upgrade.
Commenting on the successful completion of the initiative, Chorus CEO JB Rousselot said: ‘This performance upgrade builds on our purpose to ensure that New Zealanders have access to the best internet connectivity. Once adopted, New Zealand should achieve an impressive ranking for fixed broadband connectivity, and we expect to realise this early in the new year, once all retailers have been able to make the performance improvement available to their customers … This is just the beginning of what fibre can do – the capacity and speeds are virtually limitless, and we intend to roll out further upgrades and options at a wholesale level.’
