Makedonski Telekom expands 5G to a third of population

29 Nov 2021

Makedonski Telekom has expanded its 5G network to twelve cities in central and western parts of the country (equivalent to a third of the population), with plans to cover Demir Kapija, Gevgelija, Dojran, Valandovo and Bogdanci by the end of the year. Work is currently underway to replace existing technology with Ericsson equipment that will provide 5G services, greater capacity and a better user experience; the operator is aiming to cover two-thirds of the population with 5G by the end of 2022. Telecom will offer 5G services with gigabit speeds immediately after receiving the approvals for use of radio frequencies from AEK, which is expected in the first quarter of 2022. The company is investing over EUR45 million (USD50.9 million) over the next four years to modernise its network and enable 5G.
