State-owned national PTO Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) has announced the pilot launch of a mobile money service across the country. The firm received one of the nation’s first trial mobile money licences from the State Bank of Vietnam on 18 November, alongside mobile operator MobiFone. The new service will enable customers of VNPT’s mobile unit VNPT-Vinaphone to deposit, withdraw and transfer money, as well as pay for goods and services.
In March 2021 Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc signed Decision No. 316/QD-TTg approving a pilot programme for the introduction of mobile money services. From that date, telecoms operators and e-wallet providers were permitted to apply for mobile money trial licences, under which telecoms accounts can be used to pay for small value goods and services, for a period of two years.
