Pakistan’s military-run telco the Special Communication Organisation (SCO) and China Mobile Pakistan (CMPak) – which operates under the Zong brand name – have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on ‘Telecom Development in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB)’. According to the SCO the tie-up covers several projects and activities in the two regions, including the provision of backhaul connectivity to Zong, supporting the Chinese-owned provider’s ‘massive rollout plan’. Further details regarding the content of the agreement were not disclosed, however.

Commenting on the partnership with Zong, SCO DG Major General Shadi Siddeeq was quoted as saying: ‘Today we are expanding our strategic partnerships in the field of technology to affirm our greater commitment for providing the most advanced services to AJ&K and GB. SCO aspires to bring all those digital and communication services to far-flung and deprived areas of AJ&K and GB that are available in major cities of Pakistan in collaboration with other cellular operators.’
