Pretty Fly for a slight buy; Fly Link withdraws 5G bid

10 Nov 2021

Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (Agencia Nacional de Telecomunicacoes, Anatel) has confirmed that Uberlandia-based fibre ISP Fly Link has withdrawn its bid for a regional 26GHz 5G licence. Fly Link has cited a lack of additional spectrum ‘to complement its business model’ as the motivating factor behind its decision. As a result of the withdrawal, Anatel has fined the ISP 10% of the agreed BRL900,000 (USD163,033) licence fee, or BRL90,000.

TeleGeography notes that Fly Link – which was founded as a dial-up internet provider in 2002 – had previously disclosed plans to launch a 4G mobile service in 2021.
