15% of Digicel cell sites offline in Haiti due to fuel shortage

28 Oct 2021

Digicel Haiti has stated that 15% of its roughly 1,500 cell sites are now non-operational due to persistent fuel availability problems and other security-related challenges. A press statement issued to the media noted: ‘The company will continue to mobilise the necessary resources to ensure the continuity of its services. However, if this situation persists, the impacts could be much more considerable.’ The above figure has increased from 10% on 19 October.

The national fuel shortage – which has shuttered Haiti’s hospitals – has lasted for months thus far, with powerful crime gangs currently blocking National Highways 1 and 2 as they seek to force Prime Minister Ariel Henry from power. Henry has served as the acting President since the assassination of Jovenel Moise in July this year, but has refused to explain his links to one of the key suspects.
