Globe to build 1.4m fibre ports by end-2021; 1,759 5G sites now live

18 Oct 2021

Globe Telecom says it is on course to have built out a total of 1.4 million fibre-optic lines by the end of this year, having massively accelerated the pace of rollout in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. With demand for connections soaring as people are forced to work from home, Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu noted that the company built 600,000 new ports last year, compared to just 50,000 in 2019, and had increased the total to one million by 30 September 2021. Cu explained that with so many people changing their working habits, ‘that’s bringing tremendous load on the networks that wireless can no longer deliver.’

The president and CEO also said that its wireless deployment continues apace with 641 new towers having been commissioned, 1,759 5G sites now operational across the country, and 8,175 mobile sites that have been upgraded.
