Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) has announced what it called ‘one of its largest ever gigabit broadband switch-ons’, revealing that a further 2.5 million premises have gained access to faster download speeds. As part of the company’s ongoing rollout of gigabit speeds across its network, VMO2 confirmed that a total of 12.8 million premises across the country, equivalent to more than three-quarters of its network footprint, can now sign up to its ‘Gig1’ fixed broadband service, which advertises an average downlink rate of 1,130Mbps.

Commenting, VMO2’s chief executive Lutz Schuler said: ‘Our continued investment means more than three-quarters of our network is now gigabit ready, offering millions of households across the country access to future-proof services and the fastest broadband available from any major provider … We’re continuing with our mission to upgrade the UK and connect our entire network to gigabit speeds by the end of the year – a pace unrivalled by any other provider.’
