XL expands 5G coverage to the city of Medan

9 Sep 2021

Indonesian mobile network operator (MNO) XL Axiata is expanding its 5G network footprint with the launch of next generation services in the city of Medan, the capital of Indonesia’s North Sumatra province. Last month, the cellco launched 5G services in the cities of Depok, South Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Surabaya, and revealed plans to expand the network beyond Java – targeting other cities including Medan, Banjarmasin and Makassar. As the cellco progresses its gradual rollout programme, the cities of Banjarmasin and Makassar are now expected to be ready to offer 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) services to customers from mid-September 2021. The three cities were selected based on ‘the readiness of the existing network infrastructure for 5G deployment’.
