TIM CEO says Open Fiber merger plans have not been shelved

6 Sep 2021

The CEO of Telecom Italia says a plan to combine its fibre-optic assets with those of wholesale provider Open Fiber is still on the cards. ‘I don’t believe anything has been shelved,’ Reuters quotes Luigi Gubitosi as saying. The previous Italian government under Giuseppe Conte was keen to push ahead with the merger in order to create a single national network provider, but the new government of Mario Draghi has been less supportive. Both TIM and Open Fiber count state lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) as a shareholder and Gubitosi is to hold discussions with CDP over the future of the tie-up.
