XL Axiata to roll out 5G in cities outside Java

26 Aug 2021

Mobile operator XL Axiata, which earlier this month inaugurated 5G services in the cities of Depok, South Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Surabaya, has revealed plans to expand the network beyond Java – targeting other cities such as Medan, Banjarmasin and Makassar. As the cellco progresses its gradual rollout programme, the aforementioned cities are expected to be ready to offer 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) services to customers from mid-September 2021. The three cities were selected based on ‘the readiness of the existing network infrastructure for 5G deployment’.

XL Axiata director and CTO I Gede Darmayusa explained: ‘The expansion of the 5G network is part of efforts to accelerate the preparation of the required ecosystem, such as network fiberisation in all operating areas, collaboration with device providers in providing 5G smartphone devices so that customers and the public can easily get them, provision of human resources, to education to improve understanding to the public about the benefits of 5G technology to support daily life.’
