Romanian telecoms group Digi Communications is said to be ‘actively participating’ in Portugal’s multi-band spectrum auction, as it seeks to establish a presence in the country. The report, which originated with Spanish business daily Expansion, suggests that Digi is going head-to-head with Grupo MASMOVIL-backed Nowo for frequencies, although its bidding status remains unclear, given that the ‘new entrant’ phase of the auction closed in January this year.
As previously reported by CommsUpdate, the sale of 900MHz and 1800MHz spectrum – which was reserved for new market entrants – concluded on 11 January, after just eight days of bidding. The full 5G auction, which comprises sought-after spectrum in the 700MHz, 2100MHz, 2.6GHz and 3.6GHz bands commenced on 14 January and is now on its 158th day of bidding (26 August).
TeleGeography notes that Digi Communications offers a full suite of fixed and mobile telecoms services in Romania, and currently operates MVNO businesses in Spain and Italy. In March this year the group agreed to offload its Hungarian unit to local ICT group 4iG for an undisclosed sum.
