Virgin Media O2 has extended the reach of gigabit connectivity to a further 1.5 million premises, announcing that more than half of its network footprint now has access to such speeds.

As part of the latest switch-on of its gigabit service – which is offered under the ‘Gig1’ banner – Virgin Media O2 noted that it had upgraded its network in locations across the UK, with residents in towns and cities such as Bournemouth, Bristol, Northampton, Sunderland, Wolverhampton, Wigan and York now able to benefit from next-generation connectivity. According to Virgin Media O2, more than eight million homes across all four UK nations are now able to access the Gig1 service, while it expects that by the end of the year all 15 million premises covered by its network will have access to the top-end speeds.

Commenting, Lutz Schuler, Virgin Media O2’s CEO, said: ‘We are upgrading the UK to next-generation connectivity and today we’re hitting another important milestone with more than half of our network now able to access gigabit speeds.’
