3 Hong Kong to close 2G network at end-September

29 Jul 2021

Hong Kong cellco Hutchison 3 has confirmed plans to switch off its 2G network at the end of September. The firm said that 2G customers accounted for just 0.1% of its user base by mid-2021 and it plans to close the network and reuse its 900MHz and 1800MHz spectrum to support more advanced mobile data services. Its remaining 2G customers are being offered 4G or 5G tariffs. The network switch-off has been approved by Hong Kong’s Communications Authority, with the regulator advising all of the territory’s 2G users to upgrade to a 4G or 5G service.
