Spanish 700MHz auction raises EUR1bn

Spain’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation (Ministerio de Asuntos Economicos y Transformacion Digital, MINECO) has confirmed that its sale of 5G-suitable 700MHz (703MHz-733MHz/758MHz-788MHz) frequencies has generated a total of EUR1.010 billion (USD1.190 billion).

Vodafone Spain paid EUR350 million for a 2×10MHz block of spectrum, while Telefonica Espana (Movistar) paid EUR310.089 million for its own 2×10MHz block. Orange Espana, meanwhile, bid on two separate 2×5MHz blocks, each priced at EUR175 million, for a total fee of EUR350 million. Three 1×5MHz blocks (738MHz-753MHz, downlink only) went unsold.

All licences are valid for a period of 20 years, but extendable for a further 20-year period.
