XL Axiata has revealed that as at June 2021, voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) services were available to customers in 224 cities/regencies across Indonesia including Sumatra, Bangka, Java, Madura, Bali, Lombok, and Kalimantan. Launched in August 2020, the mobile operator is deploying HD voice calls to help drive smartphone penetration, which in turn helps to drive take-up of 4G services.
Indo Telko cites XL director I Gede Darmayusa as saying: ‘We continue to expand the range of VoLTE services in line with the network conditioning plan for VoLTE that we have been doing in stages. To be able to deploy VoLTE in an area, we need to prepare the network first. Meanwhile, in determining the target cities/regencies for VoLTE service expansion, among others, based on high demand for voice services, high availability of VoLTE support devices, and expansion of cities that are now enjoying XL Axiata VoLTE services’. The official went on to note that subscribers who have been actively using VoLTE have reached ‘more than 50% of the total registered customers on the XL Axiata VoLTE network’.
