Telstra confirms discussions on possible acquisition of Digicel Pacific

19 Jul 2021

Following media speculation regarding the matter, Australia’s Telstra has issued a statement confirming it has been in discussions related to a potential transaction to acquire Digicel Pacific, which has operations in six countries across the South Pacific region: Fiji, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu.

Telstra noted that it had been initially approached by the Australian Government to provide technical advice in relation to Digicel Pacific, and added that if it were to proceed with a deal, it would be with ‘financial and strategic risk management support from the Government’. Further, the Australian operator said that in addition to significant government funding and a support package, any investment would also have to be ‘within certain financial parameters with Telstra’s equity investment being the minor portion of the overall transaction’.

With discussions regarding the potential acquisition deal confirmed as still being incomplete, and there being no certainty that a transaction will proceed, Telstra has said it will keep the market updated as appropriate.
