Radius Telecoms (RED Broadband), which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Manila Electric Co (MERALCO), has launched a new ultra-high speed fibre internet plan, RED Fiber, in Metro Manila, nearby provinces and Cebu. The Philippine Daily Inquirer reports that RED Broadband is keen to establish itself as an alternative fibre provider and secure a share of the potentially lucrative fixed internet segment. Company president and CEO Quiel Delgado bullishly stated the ISP’s intention to grow from ‘a few thousand’ subscribers today to approximately half a million over five years, with bundled TV offers, ‘penalty-free trials’ and excellent customer service. Radius Telecoms’ parent MERALCO is an affiliate of domestic giant PLDT Inc. but Delgado believes there is ample space for another player in the market. The RED Broadband service – supported by a 5,000km fibre-optic network – is currently available within MERALCO’s extensive footprint and the firm is also looking to expand into Bacolod and Iloilo.
