Approximately 1.3 million people in Ecuador over the age of 65 will benefit from a 50% reduction in basic mobile and residential fixed broadband subscriptions under the ‘Senior Citizen Plan’ (Plan Adulto Mayor), after President Guillermo Lasso signed a decree reforming legislation intended to protect the rights of older citizens.

Speaking at an event to launch the plan, the Minister for Telecommunications and Information Society, Vianna Maino, explained telecoms services provide countless opportunities for growth and development, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, adding: ‘This is the first of many actions we will undertake to reduce the digital divide and improve the life chances of all Ecuadorians.’

The new subscription tariff provides 200 voice minutes to all wireline and mobile operators in the country, free on-net calls, 200 SMS to all mobile operators, 5GB of free data for web browsing, 2GB for use on collaborative platforms, and free data for instant messaging platforms.
